TL;DR
- AI citations fail in 3 ways: fake, misaligned, or too weak for the claim.
- Verify existence, alignment, and strength.
- Clarity flags source/claim mismatch and overconfident sourcing.
AI Citation Verification (and Source–Claim Alignment)
Not AI search monitoring. Not authorship detection. This page is about verifying citations inside your draft so claims are supported by sources that are real, relevant, and strong enough.
The 3 checks
1) Existence
- Is the source real?
- Are title/author/date correct?
- Does the DOI/URL resolve?
2) Alignment
- Does the source support the exact claim?
- Or is it merely adjacent?
3) Strength
- Is the source appropriate for the claim type (causal, medical/safety, market sizing)?
- Does it match the certainty level used in the draft?
Common failure modes
- Fabricated papers/journals
- Real source, wrong conclusion
- Outdated sources used for current claims
- Low-trust sources for high-stakes assertions
Citation verification checklist
- [ ] Source exists (valid URL/DOI)
- [ ] Source is credible for the domain
- [ ] Source supports the claim (directly)
- [ ] Date is appropriate
- [ ] Claim certainty matches source certainty
- [ ] Tier-A claims have strong sources
How Clarity helps
Clarity flags hallucinated citations, weak or misaligned sources, and overconfident claims that aren’t actually supported—and suggests surgical edits.
